Public Images / Local Connections

The Centre for Urban and Community Research at Goldsmiths College has been funded by the Positive Images Working Group of the Home Office Refugee Intergration Unit to carry out a piece of research on public perceptions of refugees, asylum seekers and migrants in the UK. For the first time, the cutting edge methodology of Participatory Action Research is used in this field with the overall aims to enable refugee and host communities to share, enhance and analyse their knowledge of immigration procedures and entitlements and enable them to plan and develop effective responses to integration. It also aims to facilitate the creation of a process of participatory dialogue in the community concerning migration and refugee issues. The major topic for research is the public perception of refugees, asylum seekers and other migrants and the ways that the community can be enabled to deal with negative perceptions and the local conflicts that they engender, as well as to promote positive images of refugees locally.

This project is part of the wider integration strategy for refugees which was launched by the Government in 2000 through the publication of Full and Equal Citizens: A Strategy for the Integration of Refugees into the United Kingdom.
