Public Perceptions Fund - Guidelines

Background

The Public Perceptions Fund aims to encourage individuals and organisations to set up small projects that are in line with the aims and objectives of our research. It has been set up as part of the Public Images/Local Connections research project sponsored by the Positive Images sub-group of the National Refugee Integration Forum and funded by the Home Office. The aims of the project are:

  • To enable refugee and host communities to share, enhance and analyse their knowledge of immigration procedures and entitlements and to enable them to plan and develop effective responses to integration; and
  • To facilitate the creation of a participatory dialogue in the community concerning migration and refugee issues.

The specific objectives of the project include:

  • To establish local people's knowledge about, and perceptions of immigration, with special emphasis on refugee issues.
  • To ascertain attitudes towards immigrants and refugees and assess local responses.
  • To help build respect between migrant and refugee communities, host communities and other stakeholders.
  • To help provide information and raise awareness about refugees and other immigrants in the local area.
  • To develop collaborative partnerships with community groups, local statutory bodies, host communities and refugees.
  • To disseminate information about good practice locally and nationally.

The Public Perceptions Fund

The Public Perceptions Fund will provide small grants for short-term, topical projects that meet at least some of the aims and objectives delineated above. The Fund has a total budget of 10,000 pounds to be allocated to projects in the two areas covered by the project, namely Kingston upon Hull and Thanet. The projects must be completed by 31 March 2003.

Who can apply?

All organisations, individuals and other stakeholders based in, or with a stake on, Hull or Thanet. Applications from all members and sectors of the local community are welcome. This Fund is not solely intended for organisations and individuals who already work closely with refugees, asylum seekers or other migrants. We also welcome applications from other organisations and individuals, particularly those in the voluntary and community sectors.

What sort of projects will be funded?

Any project that meets at least some of the aims and objectives of the project, including cultural events, publicity material, awareness raising events, research projects, exhibitions, meetings. We welcome inquiries about possible applications and we will be happy to discuss possible projects. Please note that we cannot fund:

  • Direct staffing costs and other continuing costs of organisations.
  • Office equipment.
  • Integration projects for refugees and asylum seekers that are not directly related to the aims and objectives of the overall research project.

The funding is intended for small projects and aims at providing consumable resources for events and information products. Please note that we cannot donate grants for unspecified purposes. All projects must be carried out in the areas covered by the project.

How much can you apply for?

We wish to provide grants for up to [unknown entity: 163]1,000. In some circumstances, applications for grants of a higher value may be made. Such applications will have to prove that the proposed projects are central to the aims and objectives of the overall research project.

Further requirements

All grants awarded will meet the following requirements:

  • The individual or organisation awarded the grant will be accountable to the research team about the way that the money was spent.
  • The grant-holders agree to write a short report after the project is over.
  • Information about the project may be used in the context of the overall research project, but only after consulting the grant-holders and other relevant stakeholders.
  • An informal evaluation or monitoring of the impact of the project on local people (including refugees) should be carried out. This can be done in the form of a short questionnaire or a feedback form, for instance.

Additional funds for that may be provided as part of the project, if necessary. The research facilitators may participate in the evaluation process.

Timetable for applications and assessment

You may submit your application at any time between now and 13th December 2002. No applications will be considered after that date. The assessment process will include an immediate acknowledgement of all applications. When criteria for application have not been met, we will contact the applicant and point out the problems with the application. We will provide a final decision on applications within 10 working days of acknowledgment. The assessment process will involve the research team based at Goldsmiths College, the project Steering Committee based at the Home Office and, whenever possible, the local Steering Groups. We reserve the right to publish information about the awarded grants in the project's newsletter and website.
